María Inés Torres Barañano

Professor M. Inés Torres received her PhD in Physics from the UPV/EHU in 1990, including an internship at the Centre National d'Études des Télécommunications in Lanion (France) in 1988. She was also a visiting researcher at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) during the years 1991 and 1992. She was a member of the board of the Spanish Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR), from 1995 to 2008. She is currently a Full Professor of Computer Science at the UPV/EHU where she has also held several academic management positions. She founded the Pattern Recognition and Speech Technology Research Group (now called the Speech-Interactive Research Group) in 1990, which she has been leading since (www.ehu.eus/en/web/speech-interactive). Professor M. Inés Torres was also a visiting Faculty at the Language Technologies Institute in Carnegie Mellon University in 2012, then a visitor in 2013. She has multi-disciplinary academic and industrial experience in the fields of Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning; Speech Processing including Emotional Speech Identification; Recognition and Understanding; Natural Language Processing including Identification of Emotions and Sentiments Analysis from Social Media; Spoken Dialog Systems and Data-driven Interactive Systems; Machine Translation of Speech and Design, and Acquisition and Annotation of Speech and Linguistic Resources to implement data-driven approaches. Professor M. Inés Torres has led more than twenty national projects and about ten research contracts with technology centres and companies, being one of them awarded as the best annual action for research transference by Euskoiker Foundation. She has also contributed to many other projects and contracts, at National and International al levels. She has published a large number of works in renowned journals and international conferences in her field of expertises well as in high-level national ones and has contributed as editor of three international books. She has served on various editorial and research steering boards as coordinator/technical leader/invited expert. Professor M. Inés Torres also serves as external expert evaluator of many national and European calls, mainly in research and Innovation actions. She is now the coordinator of the H2020 SC1-PM-15 EMPATHIC project (grant 769872) (http://www.empathic- project.eu) and participates in the H2020-MSCA-RISE MENHIR action (grant 823907). Professor M. Inés Torres was also a visiting Professor at the University of California in 2018, granted by the Spanish Minister and the Fulbright program.
